High school coursework should be at the college preparation level or higher. Advanced, honors or AP coursework is encouraged. Candidates should have four units of English, three to four units of mathematics (at least algebra I and II, and geometry; some programs require advanced mathematics), two to three units of a lab science (some programs require specific science courses), two units of foreign language and two to three units of social studies. Computer science and fine arts courses are strongly recommended. 

Transfer students may use completed college coursework to replace missing required high school courses.

Essay: Please submit a personal essay regarding your academic goals and objectives, or on a subject of personal choice.

Resume: To our adult applicants, you may attach a resume of your life experience since leaving high school.

First Years Admissions Deadlines:

Fall Admission:

December 1: Early Action Deadline

March 1: Regular Admissions Suggested Application Deadline

*Applications will be accepted after March 1 however, students are strongly encouraged to apply by this date

Spring Admission:

November 1: Recommended application submission date

January 1: Applications submitted after January 1 will be reviewed on a space available basis

Transfer Admissions Deadlines

Fall Admission:

March 1: Recommended application submission date

June 1: Transfer on-time FAFSA filing date. Deadline for transfer scholarship consideration. Nursing and Survey Engineering Technology applications will be reviewed only on a space available basis after June 1

July 1: Applications submitted after July 1 will be reviewed on a space available basis

Spring Admission:

We recommend applications be submitted as soon as possible during the fall semester. Spring admission to Nursing is on a space available basis.

November 15: Survey Engineering Technology applications complete after November 15 will be reviewed only on a space available basis.

January 1: Applications submitted after January 1 will be reviewed on a space available basis

All students selected for admission to the University of Maine must meet the admission requirements listed below. Students may fulfill certain math and foreign language requirements in middle school. High school level computer sciences and fine arts courses are strongly recommended but not required.

Majors in from this department also find that they are highly competitive in getting into graduate programs at colleges and universities around the country, where they successfully further their education leading to a Ph.D or an M.S. degree.

Majoring in biochemistrymicrobiology or molecular biology also provides the ideal preparation for further study in medical, dental, veterinary and other health-related professional schools. Students interested in these careers should register in their first year with the Health Professions Committee which provides information and assistance in selecting proper supporting courses and the application process.
